Who To Register Your Athlete With Before They Begin College

Study as an elite athlete can be very demanding. Student athletes need to have extra support, to achieve maximum results. Elite student athletes need to register with particular organisations to receive the support they need. These organisations vary from country to country. However, it is quite general across the board, and easy to find those you should be registering with. Following is a general overview of who to register your athlete with before they begin college. You will need to research which ones your athlete will register with, and make sure it is one of the first things on your to-do list. Registering our student-athletes with the correct organisation, allows them the opportunity to compete in the World University Games. Now who would want to deny their athlete that?

In Australia

The Elite Student Athlete Pathway (ESAP) Program is a fantastic partnership that came about in 2014 between the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Unisport Australia. The ESAP Program .provides leadership and direction to establish and deliver strategies that foster collaboration between Australian Universities, the National Institute Network (NIN), and National Sporting Organisations (NSOs). This is to identify, monitor and support elite student-athletes (Unisport 2019).

For those student athletes who are not registered with the ESAP program, they must be registered with one of the following organisations. They must be recognised officially as an elite athlete. Athletes must be registered with either the; Australian Institute of Sport; Australian Professional Footballers Association; State Institutes or Academies of Sport; Rugby League Professionals Association; AFL Players Association; Rugby Union Players Association; and Australian Cricketers Association.

All of these organisations and institutes provide impeccable support to our young student athletes. There are numerous avenues of support streams that will ensure your athlete enjoys their time at college. These support systems are in place to assist your athlete with the support they need. They can obtain maximum opportunity while they are studying.

In America

American college sport is made up of hundreds of sporting organisations. It is my opinion that American college sports is the cornerstone of all college sports. Thousands of student-athletes are recognised on a national scale, competing for top media coverage. American college sport is very competitive and ensuring your athlete is registered with the correct organisation is paramount.

The largest organisation is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Then there is the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Also the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). In the case your athlete competes in an individual sport not governed by an umbrella organisation, they will need to register with their individual organisations. These can include the Intercollegiate Sailing Association; Intercollegiate Rowing Association; and the National Collegiate Boxing Association to name a few.

The American College sporting organisation list does not stop there. As mentioned earlier, there are hundreds, and frankly, too many for me to list. This is why I stress all the time, that you need to do your research. Find the best option for your athlete, and get registered. Some smaller organisation you could look at as an option are The Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA); The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA); the National Christian College Association (NCCA); the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA); the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA); and the Northwest Athletic Conference (NAC).

Do your research early. Know what to expect and who to register with. If your athlete is going to be competing as a student-athlete in an American college, they will excel beyond belief. Don’t deny them that opportunity by being lazy with research. Finding what organisation your athlete should registered with, must be one of the first things you do.

In New Zealand

Student-athletes who are planning to study in New Zealand, can register with their National Sports Organisation (NSO). To represent NZ at international sports level, your athlete can register with University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand (UTSNZ). They are an affiliate of the International University Sports Federation. Being registered will give your athlete the opportunity to compete in the World University Games (summer), and the World University Championships (winter). Your athlete will have the chance to be placed in the spotlight on a global scale. As with any other country, if your athlete wants to attend college/university in New Zealand, do the research. Make the time now, and do the homework. Your athlete deserves your time. Again, this should be one of the first things on your to-do list.

In Canada

Those student-athletes who wish to study in Canada will need to be registered with the Canadian College Athletics Association (CCAA) and/or U Sports. U Sports is the national sports governing body for University sport in Canada. Your athlete should also register with the National Sports Organisation (NSO), or the Provincial Sports Organisation (PSO). These organisations can then nominate your athlete to register with the Canadian Sports Institute Pacific. Being a part of the Canadian Sports Institute gives your athlete access to world class facilities, resources, and support. It’s a great accomplishment being registered and accepted into this organisation. It is not the end of the road however, if your athlete isn’t nominated. They can still work hard to get there.

To Conclude

This simply is just a guide. My overview on who to register your athlete with before they begin college. In fact, it is one of the first items that should be on your to-do list. Research is the key. You will need to research who your athlete should be registered with, for their chosen location, and do it early. There are many opportunities that open up for your athlete the minute they are registered with these amazing organisations. They provide a stable platform for your athlete to begin their sporting career. And they offer world class facilities, resources, and support that will see your athlete thrive. The best thing of all, they provide a world stage for your athlete to compete and show the world what they are made of. It’s time to elevate your athlete to epic proportions, and you can do that by starting now.
