How To Create an Instagram Business Account

With the introduction of Instagram business in 2016, many companies switched from personal accounts to Instagram business accounts. This was done to increase market reach. Instagram business allows a person to better understand who their audience are, and what content they are engaging with. You don’t need to be a business, or even a professional, to be able to use Instagram business. There are many personalities that have used Instagram business for an advantage from a marketing standpoint. Doctors, lawyers, fitness trainers, athletes, bakers, and the list goes on. If there is a real purpose to be placed in front of a particular audience, then one will certainly benefit from creating an Instagram business account.

An elite student athlete can use an Instagram business account, not only to target college coaches, but to best understand what their market wants, what they engage with, and all the demographics of fans and followers. An athlete will need to have a Facebook business page to be able to create an Instagram business account, however, that is the only requirement needed to move forward from an already created Instagram personal account. Following, is a simple how-to create an Instagram business account.

Log in and Connect to Facebook:

The first thing to do, is open the Instagram app from a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, and connect to a Facebook business page. This can be done by clicking on the profile icon, which is located on the bottom right of your Instagram personal screen. From there, the next step is to go to settings which can be found on the top right corner of the page, and is normally those three little lines or dots. Now scroll down to an option that says ‘switch to business profile’. There will be some informational videos, and the user will have the option to connect to Facebook.

A choice is then given to set the page to public or private. Now, my suggestion is, set it to public. Please do be mindful however, of cyber safety. When a profile is set to public, it’s a smart idea to go right through all the individual settings thoroughly. PEAinternational’s Business Operations Manager, Chris Miles, did a fantastic live video on Instagram and Cyber Safety. It is highly recommended that you go through and listen to his great advice and keep yourself, and your athlete, safe in the online space at all times. Find his video here

The next step in setting up your Instagram business profile, is to give Instagram permission to manage your Facebook page. To use Instagram business, you will need to use your Facebook business page. All Facebook pages run by you will appear. ONLY choose the page you want incorporated with Instagram business, and select ‘allow’.

Create an Instagram Business Account and Let it Sing

The usual information is required here as your personal profile. However, rather than your personal details, you will add business details, and you need to pack your Instagram business profile with punch. As stated many times before, this is the first piece your target audience will see, so make it count.

To be able to move to the next stage of the profile set-up, you need to include contact details. You don’t have to include all details, however you do need to include at least one. Either an email, physical address, or phone number. On most occasions, the contact details will be filled in automatically by Instagram if they are already available on your Facebook page. Once you have clicked done, you will be taken to your business profile. Now, you can access your business insights. These can be found at the top of right corner of your profile page. It’s three small lines and once clicked on, a menu will appear when you can access all insights and keep track of promotions, engagement, recent activity, saved posts, and more. This tool will become any admins best friend, and very advantageous to any athlete/professional/company.

Edit Your Profile. Speak Your Goals and Show Your Talent

It’s now a good idea to go back and edit the profile. Add a profile picture. It’s best to use a photo of a real person as opposed to stock imagery. I suggest for athletes to use a good clear photo of themselves, and an action shot would be even better. Let people see who you are. Following this, tell people who you are in your bio. Make it short, sweet, and to the point. State very clearly what your big dream is. If you have created a website, you can also promote it here on your Instagram business account. Create a username, which again, should just be your name, perhaps with a slight variation from your personal account. If you have created a brand for yourself, be sure to include your logo for easier identification for your audience.

Find, Follow, and Invite Your Instagram Business Accounts Target Audience

The easiest way to start building your Instagram business contacts, is to go to settings which can be found by clicking on the three lines at the top of the profile page, and head right down the bottom to settings. At the top of the next page, there is an option to ‘follow and invite friends’. Here, there are many different ways to find contacts through networks you have already built. Carefully go through these and invite those you would like to follow, or have follow you. These can be found through your Facebook, email, SMS, and other sharing options. The more contacts you can find to follow, the wider audience you are able to place yourself in front of. Use keywords to search for people/athletes/coaches etc, that you want to be in front of.

Now that you have the basics on setting up an Instagram business profile, it’s time to begin filling your feed with amazing photos, funny quotes, sports statistics, training and personal record updates and so on. To post to Instagram, you need to use a picture. Be creative with filters, include action shots, and even better, make sure you post videos to grab attention. The world is your oyster, you can have fun and be super successful, so go out and do just that.
